The FOUR Best Mouthwashes to Treat YOUR Bad Breath! (+1 bonus resource!)

Treating bad breath with mouthwashes is actually pretty common. It’s super simple, and if you’re looking for a couple of effective, inexpensive mouthwashes, then you’re in the right place. There’s no need to suffer through your bad breath anymore. Just hit up Amazon or your local retailer and get ready to say bye-bye to your bad breath.

This list isn’t super comprehensive – just a couple of the best mouthwashes out there. We’ll be taking a look at ingredients, pros, cons, and much more. No mouthwash is alike, and our goal is to help you narrow down your options to the mouthwash that’s the perfect choice for you.

Ready? Let’s get started.

Mouthwash Option #1: Crest Gum Care Mouthwash

This mouthwash is designed to neutralize plaque germs around the gum line and kill the bacteria that causes plaque, and more importantly for us, bad breath. Crest also claims that this mouthwash is proven to reduce early signs of gum disease and gum inflammation.

Like all mouthwash, it’s for use by anybody older than 6. While this mouthwash is targeted more towards those who have gum issues, it can easily be used to block bad breath, as it kills germs that cause bad breath.

There are several pros to this mouthwash, and not just everything that we’ve mentioned before (killing plaque and bad breath bacteria, reduction of gum disease and inflammation.) It’s also alcohol free.

This is important because alcohol causes a dry mouth. A dry mouth, in turn, makes bad breath more likely to be an issue. So, by staying away from alcohol (or using/drinking in moderation) can greatly reduce the chances of bad breath.

This mouthwash also has a nice wintergreen flavor. A minty tasting mouth definitely smells better than whatever bad breath may be lurking around your mouth. Besides that, this mouthwash is great for your gum health.

This mouthwash is colored, which means that any junk that gets caught while you’re rinsing may appear blue or green when you spit it out. There’s no need to get concerned about debris in your mouthwash, it’s just debris from your mouth.

The active ingredient is Cetylpyridinium Chloride, which can cause tooth staining in around 3% of its users. Crest says this is because the bacteria are actually dying direction on your teeth and is proof that the mouthwash is working.

All in all, it seems as though this mouthwash is great for cleaning your mouth of bad breath, along with some great gum health benefits!

Mouthwash Option #2: TheraBreath Fresh Breath Oral Rinse

TheraBreath’s mouthwash is designed to fight off bad breath by targeting the sulfur-causing bacteria that produces bad breath. In fact, TheraBreath’s brand was started to find ways to stop bad breath, so it makes sense that their products are designed with bad breath in mind.

TheraBreath’s mouthwash is also gluten free, and certified vegan and kosher.

Besides for everything we’ve already mentioned, this mouthwash is also free of any artificial colors or flavors. Instead of fake peppermint flavor, TheraBreath uses peppermint essential oil to flavor their mouthwash. And instead of mint green coloring, this mouthwash is clear.

TheraBreath also claims that this mouthwash doesn’t burn or sting – and with the mild ingredients they use, that should be true, provided you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients.

Like other mouthwashes, this one doesn’t contain alcohol. Less alcohol, less chance of dry mouth, less chance of bad breath.

Because TheraBreath doesn’t use artificial flavors (because they’re bad for you), the essential oil they do use probably isn’t as strong as what you’re used to. It may taste a little funny at first, but you should be able to get used to it after a few days.

Mouthwash Option #3: Act Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash

This mouthwash is like the others, although this one is created specifically for cavities. But, also like the others, the flavor is potent enough to kill any bad breath. This mouthwash should also strengthen your enamel, and restore minerals to soft spots.

This mouthwash comes in a container with a built-in dispenser of sorts. You actually squeeze (not pour) the mouthwash into the cup at the top. Also, this mouthwash doesn’t contain any alcohol, and if you haven’t caught on by now, alcohol can lead to bad breath.

This mouthwash contains fluoride, which is supposedly supposed to stop cavities from forming, and also strengthen your teeth. Some people don’t like fluoride; if that’s you, it’s fine to maybe skip on this mouthwash.

Unfortunately, some of these great things can backfire. It probably doesn’t take rocket science to understand how to use the dispenser – but it may take a little while to figure out how to use it. Some have complained of very little mint flavor. Again, unfortunately, the ingredient list doesn’t clarify what type of flavoring they use. It literally says “flavor” and that’s that.

Mouthwash Option #4: Listerine Total Care Anticaviry Fluoride Mouthwash

This mouthwash is actually pretty similar to the last one. It’s made to fight off cavities. And while it does that, it should also kill all those bad breath germs. This mouthwash will also strengthen your teeth and clean your mouth, among other things.

The active ingredient in this, like the previous mouthwash we looked at, is fluoride. Again, fluoride is commonly believed to stop cavities from forming. And, unlike the other mouthwashes we’ve looked at, this one from Listerine does contain alcohol, which may kill more bacteria but will also dry your mouth out.

The mouthwash also helpfully contains directions (with a little visual) on how to open the bottle. So if you have trouble opening something, just look at the back!

Alcohol also causes that burning that sometimes accompanies mouthwash. It can also cause your mouth to peel after use. The color is also pink, which is a little different from the usual blue or green.
