If you’ve been struggling with bad breath, cavities, and other teeth problems, then antiplaque toothpaste to remove plaque may just be the option for you. We’ve compiled a list of the top four toothpastes that will do just that.
This list isn’t the most comprehensive or long; our goal is to give you a concise list with as few options as possible to help you narrow down which choice is best for you. This list also leans a bit toward the natural side, but has plenty of variety within that.
Ready to learn the four best toothpastes for plaque removal? Let’s start with number one.
Antiplaque Toothpaste Option #1: LIVFRESH Dental Gel
Okay, okay, maybe this technically isn’t a toothpaste – but it’s used similarly to toothpaste so here it is. LIVFRESH claims that this toothpaste is dentist recommended and clinically proven to remove plaque 250% better. However, they don’t specify what this gel is better than – presumably other toothpaste, but who can tell with companies these days?
This gel also is gluten, sugar, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and paraben free. This gel doesn’t contain any fluoride, which is important to note since fluoride is one of those controversial dental things.
Out of everything about this gel (besides that it’s gel and not paste), the only con is that it’s rather expensive for such a tiny tube. I suppose you might be able to calculate the cost-per-brush price, and it may be worth it to you to pay 50¢ per brush (that is, if my calculations are correct…) Then again, you are supposed to use a tiny bit of amount so maybe that makes up for the price…
The tube may clog up on you. There are several methods of un-clogging, from using a paper clip or pin to shaking the tube to clear the hole. This particular flavor contains a foaming agent. Other flavors don’t, so watch out depending on which flavor you choose.
Antiplaque Toothpaste Option #2: Hello Oral Care Fluoride Free Antiplaque and Whitening Toothpaste
This toothpaste is, yes, actually a paste. It’s designed to whiten teeth, and more importantly to us, remove plaque. This toothpaste has never been tested on animals and doesn’t contain any artificial sweeteners or dyes, fluoride, or SLS.
This toothpaste’s tube is BPA free. BPA is a nasty chemical that may affect your fertility and may also harm babies. Besides that, guess what? This toothpaste is also gluten free and vegan.
This toothpaste uses peppermint to refresh you, tea tree oil to block bad breath, and coconut oil to moisturize your mouth – all important things irrelevant to plaque removal but are still good for your well-being.
My main annoyance with Hello Oral is that they don’t use proper grammar. Yes, you are suppose to capitalize the first letter after every sentence. In case you didn’t know that.
There are some packaging complaints that the tube doesn’t roll up like other brands and that there’s still more inside even when you think it’s all done. Quality toothpaste should be worth the extra second it takes to squeeze, in my opinion.
Antiplaque Toothpaste Option #3: Tom’s Of Maine Fluoride-Free Antiplaque and Whitening Toothpaste
Oh, look, another actual toothpaste! And, as a bonus, I can give this toothpaste a stamp of approval since I actually use this kind.
Tom’s is a brand that uses naturally derived ingredients and doesn’t contain any artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors. It’s also vegan, and is fluoride free. And, for everything we care about, it’s designed to remove plaque and whiten teeth.
The toothpaste tube is BPA free, and is recyclable. Tom’s has also partnered with TerraCycle to keep products out of landfills to keep the earth green.
This toothpaste does have sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in it. SLS is another controversial toothpaste ingredient like fluoride; if you want to know more I recommend that you do your own research. Basically, SLS is the stuff that makes toothpaste all nice and foamy.
My only complaint with this toothpaste is that the mint taste can be a bit overbearing at times. Some say that it’s mild tasting, so it probably just depends on personal taste preferences. Fennel is another flavor option – I’m not sure why you would flavor toothpaste with fennel, but if you want an adventure, maybe try that out.
Antiplaque Toothpaste Option #4: Davids Natural Toothpaste
Like all of the other toothpastes (and gel) we’ve looked at, this toothpaste is designed to fight off plaque, whiten the teeth, and freshen up your breath.
Davids is based in California and uses naturally sourced and derived ingredients in their products. This toothpaste doesn’t contain SLS, artificial flavors, sweeteners, or colors and is also fluoride free (shocking, I know.)
This toothpaste comes with a metal tube key, of which I have no idea of what you do with. The tube is made of aluminum for recyclability and long safety reasons. I guess you’re supposed to use the key with that. Some say that it causes a mess and that the toothpaste oozes out of its own accord.
The toothpaste doesn’t contain SLS, as mentioned earlier, so there’s no foaming up with this toothpaste. It may take a while to get used to, but should become second natural within a few days.
Besides that, the real complaint I have with Davids is their customer support. Whoever replies to the questions on Amazon is sassy and rude, and is not the type of person I would want to talk to over Amazon comments, email, or in person.
