Listerine and Therabreath are both well-known companies who sell oral health products. Both have reputable products that many people have enjoyed over the years. But which product is better? Therabreath’s or Listerine’s?
In this article, we’ll take a look at Listerine vs Therabreath, where we’ll learn about the people behind the companies, what they sell, and specific products from each of these expert companies. So, lets go!
Listerine
It all started way back in the 1800s. Even before Listerine was thought up of. There was this famous scientist called Louis Pasteur. He’s known for the method of pasteurization, where you heat a liquid up to a certain temperature, and kill the majority of the germs.
Pasteur did a bunch of tests with bacteria, and microbes. He watched how these bacteria would grow and flourish, and how to keep some of these bacteria from growing.
An English doctor by the name of Joseph Lister took Pasteur’s work, and used it in his surgery operations. As Dr. Lister did surgeries, he noticed the large amount of infections that would come after the operations. Dr. Lister found out that if he added carbolic acid onto his bandages, it would drastically reduce the infections that were being caused.
Around the turn of the century, an American doctor by the name of Joseph Lawrence learned of what Dr. Lister was doing, and improved upon it. Lawrence made an antiseptic that he then sold for others to use.
The name of the antiseptic? Listerine.
Listerine has been going strong since the early 1900s, ever since it was advertised as a mouthwash. Since that time, Listerine has come to be known as one of the most well-known mouthwashes in the world.
Listerine doesn’t only sell mouthwashes. They sell mints, floss, stain remover, whitening strips, flosser heads, and even toothpaste.
Listerine Zero Alcohol Mouthwash
While Listerine sells a wide range of mouthwashes, this Zero Alcohol Mouthwash is the one we really only recommend. It’s because the lack of alcohol in it.
Alcohol can actually bring about bad breath, due to the compounds and properties it is made up of. Alcohol makes for an easy drying agent. It loves to dry things out. So when it gets into your mouth, it naturally dries your mouth out. When this happens, halitosis usually follows close behind.
Bacteria that produce bad breath flourish in dry environments, and a dry mouth is no different. So it’s always recommended finding a mouthwash that doesn’t include alcohol. That’s why we choose this Listerine mouthwash as opposed to others.
The ingredients for this Mouthwash are: Water, Sorbitol, Propylene Glycol, Poloxamer 407, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Eucalyptol, Benzoic Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Methyl Salicylate, Thymol, Sodium Saccharin, Menthol, Flavor, Sucralose, Green 3.
Claiming to be the #1 dentists recommend, this mouthwash helps fight against and kills 99% of the bad breath bacteria that are in your mouth. While brushing just gets only a part of your mouth clean, this mouthwash states that it will get your whole mouth clean, leaving you with a fresh mouth.
By rinsing your mouth out for 30 seconds with this mouthwash, doing it twice daily, you’ll be able to better protect your mouth, and fight against the halitosis that is within your body.

Therabreath
Therabreath was started by a Dentist by the name of Harold Katz. With a degree in dentistry, and bacteriology, Dr. Katz was able to understand what exactly bad breath was and how it affected people.
His interest into bad breath started back in the 1990s, when his daughter was fighting severe chronic halitosis. Like any good father would do, Dr. Katz tried everything to help his daughter’s condition. Everything he tried to do for her never quite took away her bad breath.
So Dr. Katz started looking into the bacteria that caused bad breath. What he found out was that, contrary to popular idea, bad breath bacteria didn’t typically come from the digestive tract, but it came more often from the top of the tongue, and from the back of the throat.
Katz also noticed that these bacteria produced something called Volatile Sulfuric Compounds, which is what made people’s breath smell so bad. With this knowledge, Katz started experimenting with other rinses and mouthwashes to see how best to fight against these bad bacteria.
What he found out was extraordinary. Oxygen fought against the bad breath bacteria. Katz’s experiments showed him that these bacteria couldn’t live if they were exposed to oxygen.
With this knowledge, Katz started Therabreath, and started making products that help with oxidizing your mouth. While his products have been refined over the years, the truth behind the products have stayed the same. Oxygen kills bad breath bacteria.
Therabreath contains their own patented version of sodium chlorite, called OXYD-8, which helps bring oxygen to every part of your mouth.
Not only are mouthwashes sold from Therabreath, but a number of other products can be found within their stores. From nasal sprays and teeth whitening treatment to tongue scrapers and toothpastes.
Therabreath Fresh Breath Oral Rinse
Therabreath sells a number of mouthwashes, and bad breath rinses. Some help fight against dry mouth, others tonsils, and still others, against gum disease.
This specific oral rinse is for helping against your general bad breath, and is useful in fighting all sorts of ailments in your mouth. It comes with the approval of the ADA, the American Dental Association.
Therabreath makes it’s products in the USA, and they come with no artificial flavors or dyes. This product, along with a number of others, is certified Kosher, as well as certified Vegan and Gluten-free.
Ingredients: Purified Water, OXYD-8 (Dr. Katz’s patented version of Oxychlor compounds), PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Benzoate, Essential Oil of Peppermint, Sodium Hydroxide.
Using this oral rinse can help you find bad breath relief for up to 24 hours, provided you follow the directions in using it. And because of the lack of alcohol content in it, you shouldn’t have as bad of a burning sensation, as with other mouthwashes.
Listerine vs Therabreath
Listerine and Therabreath come from companies that have reputable backgrounds. But which one works better than the other? Is there really one that is superior?
The answer might be a little disappointing to some.
Unfortunately there really is no way to say a certain product is better. Bad breath comes around because of a number of reasons, and those reasons could be caused by other issues. Listerine could help with your issues, or, on the flip side Therabreath could.
And just because Therabreath helped your friend out, doesn’t mean that it will yourself out. Listerine might just be the cure that works for you.
One of them should work though. It’s just a matter of finding the right one that works for you. If Therabreath doesn’t work for you, then switch to Listerine and see if it works better. Sooner or later, you’ll find a product that helps fight against your bad breath.
When you do find that product that works for you, make sure to leave a comment, telling others about your experience, and what works for you!
